Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has extended his sympathies to the Niger State Government and victims affected by the recent flood disaster in Mokwa.
Obi, who led a delegation on a condolence visit to the Government House in Minna, was received by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, on behalf of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
Speaking during the visit, Obi emphasized the strategic importance of Niger State, particularly in the area of agriculture.
“Whatever affects Niger State affects the entire nation,” he said. “Given its agricultural potential, the state is capable of transforming Nigeria for the better.”
He stressed the need to explore alternative solutions to mitigate the impact of recurring floods, noting that while flooding is a natural disaster, it can be effectively managed. Obi also pledged to rally further support for the victims.
The former governor offered prayers for the repose of the souls lost in the disaster and asked for God’s comfort upon their families and the entire Mokwa community.
In response, Governor Bago, represented by Deputy Governor Garba, described the flood as a national tragedy. He thanked Obi for the visit, describing it as an honour to the state.
Governor Bago reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reducing the impact of floods through proactive measures and public sensitization, particularly discouraging residents from settling near riverbanks. He also reiterated his appeal for both national and international support to alleviate the suffering of those affected.
