Protests broke out in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Monday as residents took to the streets to decry the ongoing killings in parts of the state, allegedly carried out by suspected Fulani militants.
The demonstration was led by the Plateau State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Polycarp Lubo, alongside other Christian leaders. Protesters, carrying placards with various messages, gathered at Fwavwei Junction along a community road, causing significant traffic congestion that left commuters stranded.
The demonstrators called for urgent government intervention to halt the escalating violence, particularly targeted at indigenous communities.
The protest follows a recent visit to the state by the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, and the service chiefs, who promised a swift resolution to the crisis. However, the killings have persisted, especially in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas, where over 100 people have reportedly lost their lives in the last two weeks.
A community leader, Gyang Dalyop, voiced the community’s frustration: “We are not happy with the continuous attacks and killings in our communities. That’s why we have come out again to protest these happenings.”
Protesters were later seen marching toward the Government House to formally present their grievances to Governor Caleb Muftwang.
