The Plateau State Police Command has arrested a clergyman and two military personnel over an alleged conspiracy to abduct the wives of two prominent bishops in Jos.
The suspects were picked up on August 7 following intelligence indicating a planned kidnapping, according to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama.
The cleric has been identified as 42-year-old Reverend Hassan Yunisim Mijah of Tudun Wada in Jos North. The two other suspects are Sergeant Ezra Sunday of the Nigerian Air Force and OS Usman Khalid of the Nigerian Navy. Both servicemen are said to be attached to Sector One of Operation Enduring Peace in Jos.
Police sources indicate the group allegedly targeted the wives of Bishop Ephraim Gongden and retired Bishop Benjamin Kwashi, both of whom reside in the Rantya area of Jos South Local Government Area.
Acting on the intelligence, operatives of the Vigilance and Criminal Response Unit swung into action and effected the arrests. The suspects reportedly made confessional statements during interrogation.
The Plateau State Police Command has formally notified the leadership of Operation Enduring Peace of the arrest of the two military personnel serving under the joint security arrangement.
Investigations are continuing to unravel the full circumstances of the alleged plot and to determine whether other persons were involved.
Efforts to obtain independent confirmation from the Plateau State Police Command proved unsuccessful. When contacted, the command’s spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, answered a call seeking clarification but ended the conversation shortly afterwards. A follow-up message sent to him remained unanswered as of the time of filing this report.
