Police in Imo State have arrested and subsequently released officials of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Imo State University (IMSU) branch, after the union declared an indefinite strike.
The arrests followed the officials’ participation in a radio programme on Tuesday where they discussed the industrial action. Those detained included branch Chairman Stephen Oguji and other union executives.
ASUU-IMSU announced the indefinite strike on Monday, citing the non-implementation of an agreement on academic staff welfare and conditions of service. The union insists the pact reached with the Federal Government applies to state-owned universities as well.
A source at the institution confirmed the officials were held for several hours of questioning after the radio appearance before being released. “They were arrested after a radio programme in the morning. We tried to reach them but couldn’t. But we learnt they have just been released. The union can never be intimidated by this approach,” the source said.
Imo State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Henry Okoye had not responded to inquiries at the time of filing this report.
The strike comes as IMSU prepares to begin examinations, raising concerns among students about disruption to the academic calendar.
