The North-East Governors’ Forum has identified the region’s poor road infrastructure as a key factor exacerbating insecurity and hampering development efforts.
This concern was highlighted in a nine-point communiqué issued at the end of the Forum’s 11th meeting, held in Damaturu, Yobe State. The statement was signed by the Forum’s Chairman and Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum.
The governors urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritize the completion of abandoned federal projects across the North-East, noting that such projects are crucial to tackling poverty, insecurity, and the overall underdevelopment of the subregion.
In its communiqué, the Forum reaffirmed its commitment to opening up the region for investment, boosting agricultural productivity for food security, addressing climate change, promoting skills acquisition, and accelerating industrialization. These, the governors said, are necessary steps to create jobs for the teeming youth population, many of whom remain vulnerable to recruitment by insurgent groups.
“The Forum reiterates that addressing insecurity in the North-East requires a multi-faceted strategy,” the communiqué stated. “This includes not just military action but also tackling the root causes such as youth unemployment through vocational and technical education, better road networks, improved access to education, and poverty reduction.”
The governors emphasized their continued collaboration on matters of shared regional interest, especially in areas of security, economic integration, and social development.
The Forum is scheduled to reconvene from July 27 to 29, 2025, in Jalingo, Taraba State, to continue its deliberations.
