Popular Lagos socialite and nightlife influencer Mike Eze-Nwalie Nwogu, widely known as Pretty Mike, has ignited widespread debate after arriving at the 50th birthday celebration of Helen Ezisi accompanied by 50 men and women dressed in full legal regalia, including wigs, gowns, collars, and tabs.
The dramatic entrance, staged at a private event in Lagos before continuing at his nightclub, Proxy Lagos, was intended as a tribute to the legal profession. In a post on social media, Pretty Mike described lawyers as “the backbone of order, justice and structure in society,” expressing what he called his deep respect for the profession.
The number of participants in the entourage was chosen to reflect the celebrant’s golden jubilee. Although the theme centered on lawyers, Helen Ezisi is not a legal practitioner. Reports indicate that the idea was Pretty Mike’s personal creative concept, influenced in part by his recent legal victory in which he was discharged of drug-related allegations by a Federal High Court in Lagos.
The spectacle quickly generated mixed reactions online. While some praised the creativity and entertainment value of the display, others questioned whether the use of legal attire by non-lawyers diminished the dignity of the profession. Several commentators also wondered whether the stunt violated any legal or professional regulations.
Legal observers note that the Rules of Professional Conduct primarily regulate how lawyers wear official attire, particularly in court settings. While lawyers are generally restricted from wearing robes outside official functions without approval, those rules do not directly apply to members of the public using similar attire as costumes. Consequently, wearing legal-style clothing at a social event is not ordinarily considered an offence unless it involves impersonation, deception, or the false exercise of legal authority.
Nonetheless, critics argue that turning legal robes and wigs into party costumes risks trivialising symbols associated with the administration of justice and the rule of law. Supporters, however, maintain that the display was a form of artistic expression and that respect for the legal profession is determined more by professional conduct than by themed entertainment.
As of the time of reporting, the Nigerian Bar Association had not issued any official statement on the incident. Whether the association should respond remains a matter of debate among legal practitioners and the public.
Regardless of the differing opinions, the event has once again demonstrated Pretty Mike’s ability to capture public attention and spark conversation far beyond the social scene, extending into professional and legal circles.
