The All Progressives Congress (APC) has backed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, insisting that suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara is responsible for the crisis that led to the decision.
In a statement, APC spokesperson Felix Morka outlined what he described as Fubara’s numerous impeachable offenses, arguing that the former governor’s actions directly provoked the emergency rule.
Morka stated that Fubara’s decision to demolish the Rivers State House of Assembly was a fundamental attack on democracy, effectively crippling the state’s governance structure. He added that by governing without a functioning legislature and spending state funds without legal appropriation, Fubara had effectively nullified his own constitutional authority as governor.
“There cannot be a governor without a legislature and a judiciary. All three arms of government must function together for a government to be legally recognized under the Nigerian Constitution,” Morka said.
He referenced a Supreme Court ruling, asserting that Rivers State had been without a government since the state legislature was dismantled. “By his reckless actions, Fubara not only set the stage for this outcome but effectively asked for it,” he added.
Morka described President Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration as a necessary and lawful intervention to restore order, protect lives, and ensure governance in the state.
“Once again, President Tinubu has demonstrated courage and decisive leadership in preventing a complete breakdown of law and order,” Morka concluded.
