Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has explained why he appointed Nyesom Wike as his Chief of Staff during his tenure as governor.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday, Amaechi revealed that Wike had initially lobbied to become the Commissioner for Finance, but he declined the request.
“I appointed him (Wike) as Chief of Staff so I could supervise him,” Amaechi stated. “Adoke flew from Abuja to Port Harcourt, saying Wike wanted me to make him Commissioner for Finance. I refused and insisted he work directly under me so I could monitor his activities.”
Amaechi, who appeared dismissive of his former ally, added, “I’m only clarifying this because I don’t engage in issues with children. He made himself Chief of Staff, he made himself Governor, he made himself Minister, and even Local Government Chairman.”
The remarks add another layer to the long-standing political rivalry between the two prominent Rivers politicians.
