A Russian drone struck a Chinese cargo vessel in the Black Sea overnight, according to Ukraine, just a day before Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit Beijing for talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack occurred near the port city of Odesa, a key hub for Ukraine’s grain exports. He stated that one of the drones hit the Chinese-owned cargo ship, identified by Ukraine’s navy as the KSL Deyang.
According to Ukrainian naval spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk, the vessel was preparing to load cargo when it was struck by a Shahed drone during the night. All crew members, who were Chinese nationals, escaped unharmed, and the ship continued its journey after managing the damage onboard.
Ukraine’s navy released an image showing part of the vessel’s upper deck scorched from the impact.
Zelensky also revealed that Russia launched a massive overnight assault involving 524 drones and 22 missiles, including ballistic and cruise missiles.
The incident comes shortly before Putin’s two-day visit to China, where both countries are expected to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties. While China has repeatedly called for peace talks, it has avoided condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and continues to describe itself as neutral in the conflict.
The Black Sea remains a critical battleground for trade and security following the collapse of the 2022 grain export agreement brokered by Turkey and the United Nations between Kyiv and Moscow.
