The national leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has firmly denied reports suggesting the appointment of three new members to its National Working Committee (NWC).
In a statement released by the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Alhaji Muhammad Biu, the SDP described the reports as false, misleading, and unauthorized, urging party members and the general public to disregard them.
The reports in question had claimed that Senator Ugochukwu Uba, Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar, and Mr. Hussaini Ado Bello were appointed as Deputy National Chairman (South), Deputy National Chairman (North), and National Financial Secretary, respectively. These claims were attributed to a statement allegedly issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba.
However, the party leadership insisted that no such appointments were made, and no official meeting or constitutional session had taken place to warrant the filling of those positions.
“We categorically state that no such appointments have been made. The press release in circulation is false, unauthorized, and does not reflect the decisions or procedures of the SDP National Working Committee,” the party declared.
The SDP reaffirmed its commitment to due process, transparency, and inclusive participation in all internal matters, particularly concerning leadership restructuring and national representation. As the 2027 general elections draw closer, the party noted attempts by certain individuals and political rivals to sow discord and weaken what it described as “the only credible opposition party left standing in Nigeria.”
The party leadership clarified that the alleged meeting held on Thursday, May 15, 2025—cited in the disputed reports—did not authorize or adopt any resolutions regarding new appointments to the NWC.
Calling for unity and focus, the SDP urged its members and supporters to disregard the misleading reports and continue working towards national development and grassroots empowerment. It emphasized that the SDP is not a personal venture but a national platform committed to the ideals of inclusion, transparency, and service.
The statement concluded with a call for intensified grassroots mobilization, particularly in areas where the party aims to expand its electoral presence, reaffirming the SDP’s determination to offer purposeful leadership and serve as a vehicle for national redemption ahead of the 2027 elections.
