The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has begun a nationwide campaign to help investors and beneficiaries recover unclaimed dividends and inherited assets, aiming to strengthen investor protection and cut the volume of dormant funds in Nigeria’s capital market.
The initiative was unveiled in Abuja through the Probate/Unclaimed Monies Awareness and Investor Clinic. It focuses on educating investors, beneficiaries and estate executors about probate procedures, estate administration and the steps needed to access shares, dividends and other financial assets left by deceased relatives.
SEC Director-General Dr. Emomotimi Agama said the Commission is tackling a persistent problem that leaves many families unable to claim investments after a relative’s death. Beneficiaries often struggle to obtain probate, letters of administration, death certificates and other required documents.
“For many Nigerian families, the death of a loved one who held shares, dividends or other investments marks the beginning of a long and often confusing journey,” Agama said. He described unclaimed dividends and dormant assets as “real money, money that belongs to real families, sitting idle, disconnected from the people it was meant to serve.” The Commission, he added, is working to close the gap through policy reforms and ongoing engagement with investors and beneficiaries.
Ms. Nkechinyelu Okoye, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Meristem Registrars and Probate Services Limited, pointed to poor awareness and weak estate planning as major causes of unclaimed assets.
She identified three common groups affected: beneficiaries who do not realise financial assets form part of an estate, those unaware that a deceased relative held investments, and those unfamiliar with the documentation needed to make a claim.
The campaign seeks to equip families with clearer information so that funds currently locked in the market can reach their rightful owners.
