The Nigerian Senate has issued a formal response to recent remarks made by Pastor Tunde Bakare, founder of Citadel Global Community Church, who referred to the 10th National Assembly as a “rubber stamp.”
Reacting to the comment, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, cautioned Pastor Bakare against what he described as “overly critical and dismissive” rhetoric lacking in evidence.
“Pastor Bakare, a respected cleric and political voice, has contributed to national discourse over the years. However, his recent remarks are marked by undue contempt and appear to be politically motivated,” Adaramodu stated.
He noted that given Bakare’s history as a former vice presidential candidate and presidential aspirant, his comments cannot be seen as neutral. “His criticisms reflect a political undertone, possibly driven by past ambitions and future alignments,” Adaramodu added.
The Senate further stressed that while Pastor Bakare is entitled to his views, his position as a lawyer, cleric, and political figure carries the responsibility of respecting constitutional boundaries and the integrity of democratic institutions.
“The National Assembly is committed to upholding the rule of law and judicial independence. We refrain from engaging in matters before the courts, as doing so would undermine judicial processes,” Adaramodu explained.
Addressing Bakare’s suggestion of undue Executive influence over the legislature, the Senate pointed to several instances of constructive disagreement with the Executive. These include disputes over aspects of the presidential declaration concerning the Rivers State situation—issues which, according to Adaramodu, demonstrate the Assembly’s independence and commitment to its constitutional mandate.
He also dismissed comparisons with the rejected Third Term agenda of past administrations, saying, “No such unconstitutional proposal has ever been brought before the 10th Assembly.”
“To malign the entire institution based on personal frustration, ideological bias, or political calculations is unfair and detrimental to democratic progress,” the Senate spokesman said.
The Senate also noted Bakare’s pattern of harsh criticism toward previous assemblies—some of which he now praises. “We remain hopeful that, in time, Pastor Bakare will recognize the efforts of the 10th Assembly to deliver on its responsibilities to the Nigerian people,” Adaramodu added.
Reaffirming its openness to engagement, the Senate emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue over divisive rhetoric.
“We encourage all public figures, especially those with influence in civic and spiritual spheres, to balance their criticisms with facts and a shared sense of responsibility. Our democracy is strengthened by thoughtful input that drives progress—not commentary that fuels resentment,” the statement concluded.
