The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday called on the military to immediately redeploy adequate personnel to the North-East region following the killing of 12 soldiers by Boko Haram insurgents in Marte, Borno State.
The Senate also emphasized the need for the troops to be equipped with modern technology to effectively combat the resurgence of insurgency in the region. In addition, it directed its Committees on Army and Air Force to ensure compliance with the resolution.
These resolutions followed the adoption of a motion titled “The Resurgence of Boko Haram in Borno and Yobe States,” sponsored by the Senate Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Monguno, and co-sponsored by lawmakers from Borno and Yobe States.
Presenting the motion, Senator Monguno noted that in recent years, Boko Haram had taken control of about two-thirds of the Local Government Areas in Borno State. He, however, acknowledged the efforts of the Nigerian military and the Civilian Joint Task Force in reclaiming the affected areas and restoring relative peace.
“Following these gains, the military shifted its tactical command to the North-West to address issues of kidnapping and banditry. Unfortunately, we are now witnessing a resurgence of Boko Haram activities,” Monguno stated.
He revealed that on Monday, May 12, insurgents attacked Marte town in Marte Local Government Area, killing more than a dozen soldiers. He expressed concern over the terrorists’ increasing use of modern technology, including drones, to launch attacks and plant improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which often result in mass casualties and obstruct mobility.
The Senate’s resolution comes amid renewed fears over Boko Haram’s operations in the North-East, years after significant progress was reported in the fight against insurgency.
