In a significant political development, Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2023 Adamawa State governorship election, has formally defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The move comes months after Binani left the APC for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), reflecting the ongoing wave of political realignments across Nigeria.
The NDC described her defection as a major boost and a key realignment in the country’s evolving political landscape.
Binani was officially received into the party in Abuja by the NDC’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside National Chairman Moses Cleopas and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
Speaking at the reception, Binani explained that her decision was driven by the party’s constitution and its commitment to structured, policy-driven governance.
“The answer is simple. After reviewing the NDC’s constitution, I saw that the party prioritises structured and policy-driven governance,” she said.
She also cited the strong support from her political base, noting that many of her supporters had already joined the NDC before her formal declaration.
“My priority is the interest of my supporters. Even before I made my decision, they had already gone far,” she stated, adding that Adamawa State now ranks among the states with the highest number of registered NDC members.
Binani expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the warm reception and pledged to contribute to the growth of the NDC both in Adamawa State and at the national level.
“We will work hard to build the NDC in Adamawa and contribute our quota to its development nationally,” she said. She also urged the party to uphold fairness, transparency, and internal democracy.
In his welcome address, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson described the NDC as an open and inclusive platform for Nigerians seeking credible political alternatives. “This party is open, inclusive, and ready to harness your energy, ideas, and strength,” Dickson said.
He immediately assigned Binani a leadership role in Adamawa State and tasked her with strengthening the party’s structures and promoting unity.
Dickson further called on women and youths nationwide to join the NDC, emphasising the party’s commitment to affirmative action for greater inclusion. He reminded Nigerians of their constitutional right to join or leave any political party, using a metaphor to drive home his point:
“If the vehicle you boarded is no longer taking you to your destination, you have every right to step down and board a better one. The NDC is that better vehicle.”
Senator Aishatu Binani remains one of the most influential political figures in Adamawa State and northern Nigeria. Her strong performance as the APC’s governorship candidate in the 2023 election against incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri further cemented her prominence.
Her latest defection is expected to significantly reshape political dynamics in Adamawa State as stakeholders prepare for the 2027 elections, while also bolstering the NDC’s ambition to emerge as a formidable national alternative.
