Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has reaffirmed her commitment to pursuing the sexual harassment lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stating that she will see the matter through to its logical conclusion in court.
In a letter dated April 30, 2025, addressed to Akpabio’s counsel, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), Akpoti-Uduaghan maintained that her petition reflects the truth of the events and that further comments would be reserved for the court, which has the exclusive jurisdiction to rule on the matter.
The senator criticized Agbakoba for allegedly demanding that she provide evidence of the sexual harassment claims outside the existing pleadings filed before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in a related suit (No. CV/816/25) filed by Akpabio’s wife, Unoma.
She wrote, “The assessment of evidence is the sole responsibility of the courts. Your demand for evidence at this stage demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of what constitutes sexual harassment under global standards and protocols.
“This approach reflects a narrow view of a widespread and serious issue. In my respectful opinion, it appears to be another attempt by your client to trivialize the matter and divert attention from its substance.
“Should further particulars be necessary, they will be provided in the ordinary course of legal disclosure, subject to the direction of the court. Any attempt to sidestep this process undermines the rule of law, which you have long championed.”
Akpoti-Uduaghan also condemned what she described as a media campaign allegedly orchestrated by Akpabio through his legal team, calling it inconsistent with his earlier refusal to have the matter addressed in the Senate.
“It is a basic principle that a litigant cannot seek justice in court while simultaneously seeking public validation through the press. The rule against parallel adjudication exists to protect the integrity of the judiciary, ensure fairness, and uphold the dignity of all arms of government,” she stated.
