The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has cautioned the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) against aligning with individuals it described as enemies of their detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and spokesperson Thompson Ohia, Ohanaeze expressed concern over what it called IPOB’s growing interference in its affairs. The group urged IPOB to maintain neutrality and desist from actions that could undermine the Igbo collective struggle.
According to Ohanaeze, certain factions within IPOB appear to be influenced by individuals who are allegedly benefitting from Kanu’s prolonged detention. The organization accused these elements of defending the very people complicit in the IPOB leader’s incarceration.
“It is disturbing to witness IPOB defend some Igbo leaders who have a history of antagonism towards the group,” the statement said. “These individuals are using Nnamdi Kanu’s name for personal and political gain, not for his freedom.”
Ohanaeze further alleged that attempts were being made to use IPOB as a tool to blackmail its leadership. It noted that it would not engage in media battles with IPOB, despite provocations.
“We will not be drawn into public disputes with IPOB, even as they’ve been misled into thinking that attacking Ohanaeze serves their cause,” the group stated.
The organization also challenged IPOB to reconsider its current alliances, warning that those it supports are more interested in photo opportunities in court than securing Kanu’s release.
“The ongoing persecution of innocent youths, falsely labelled as IPOB terrorists, is a direct result of this strategic misalignment,” the statement added.
Ohanaeze called for unity and a renewed focus on the common goal of justice for Nnamdi Kanu and peace in the Southeast.
“At this critical time, we urge IPOB and all concerned stakeholders to re-evaluate their stance. Our collective energy should be directed towards identifying and confronting our true adversaries.”
The group concluded by calling for a future defined by justice, unity, and respect for the shared values of the Igbo people.
