The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, on Tuesday commissioned the new headquarters of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), a facility the commission’s chief described as the largest data protection authority office in Africa.
The event was hosted by the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji. Tijani praised Olatunji’s leadership and the commission’s role in Nigeria’s digital transformation.
He also credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with backing the data protection system, pointing to the signing of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, a directive requiring ministries, departments and agencies to comply with data protection rules, and the allocation of the property now used as the commission’s headquarters.
Tijani commended NDPC staff and called on them to do more so that data protection and privacy become priorities for Nigerians.
In remarks titled “Upward Trajectory of NDPC,” Olatunji thanked the president and the minister for their support. He said the commission had grown from a 12-member unit inside the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) into a leading data protection authority.
He listed several figures for that expansion: 356 licensed data protection-compliant organisations, more than 27,000 jobs created, over 66,000 Nigerians reached through the Virtual Privacy Academy, and 228 training programmes that he said had benefited more than 99,000 people.
Stakeholders from the data protection and digital economy sectors attended the ceremony.
