President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially flagged off the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Federal Highway, marking a major milestone in one of Northern Nigeria’s most vital infrastructure projects.
Speaking on behalf of the President at a ceremony held in Jere, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Sunday, Governor Uba Sani described the highway as a critical lifeline connecting the Federal Capital Territory to more than 12 states across the North Central, North West, and North East regions.
“This is the busiest road in Northern Nigeria and the second busiest in the country after the Lagos-Ibadan expressway,” Governor Sani said, decrying years of neglect that led to frequent accidents, insecurity, and stunted economic growth.
The project, originally awarded to Julius Berger under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, experienced delays after the current government revoked the contract and re-awarded it to a new contractor. Although parts of the road were previously completed, much of the construction had stalled—until now.
Governor Sani, a former senator representing Kaduna Central, noted that he had persistently pushed for the project’s revival. “As a senator, I mobilised my colleagues, held town hall meetings, and directly engaged President Tinubu to prioritise this crucial road,” he said.
He attributed one of the major setbacks to insecurity, particularly along the Abuja-Kaduna corridor. However, he commended the current administration’s non-kinetic security approach and the Kaduna Peace Model for restoring safety along the route. He also praised the efforts of National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, for coordinating security efforts that helped stabilise the area.
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, revealed that the 700-kilometre highway will be constructed with reinforced concrete pavement and is scheduled for completion within 14 months. He added that an additional 11-kilometre stretch will link the Kano section directly to Aminu Kano International Airport.
“The reconstruction of this highway will not only enhance mobility and trade but also unlock new economic opportunities and boost regional security,” Governor Sani added.
Upon completion, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway is expected to ease the movement of goods and people, stimulate regional development, and address longstanding infrastructure challenges across Northern Nigeria.
