President Bola Tinubu has described the defection of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and his predecessor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the most significant political shift in Nigeria’s history.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at a grand reception held in Asaba to welcome the defectors and the entire PDP structure in the state, Tinubu said the scale of the defection was unprecedented.
“This is the first time in our political history that a sitting governor has crossed over to another party with the full structure of his former party—from ward to state and national levels, including elected and appointed officials,” Shettima said.
The President urged Oborevwori, Okowa, and their supporters to see themselves not as newcomers or tenants in the APC, but as co-owners of the party and key stakeholders in the Nigerian project.
The reception was attended by key figures in the APC including National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma.
“This is a bold and unprecedented political move,” Shettima added, praising Oborevwori’s governance since assuming office and recognizing him as the new APC leader in Delta State.
In his remarks, Governor Oborevwori said the decision to join the APC was driven by the best interest of Delta State. “We can no longer afford to remain in opposition. This is a patriotic movement aimed at positioning our state for better opportunities,” he said.
Oborevwori also pledged to work towards reconciling any grievances within the APC in the state, ensuring a united front.
Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa echoed the sentiment, saying the move was not a mistake. “For over a decade, Delta has remained on the sidelines at the national level despite our vital contribution to the country’s economy. It’s time to take our rightful place,” he said.
Also in attendance were the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo; former Deputy Senate President, Chief Ovie Omo-Agege; and several other dignitaries.
