A prominent Northern elder and public affairs analyst, Alhaji Dabo Sambo, has issued a stern warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to urgently address the escalating insecurity and banditry plaguing the northern region of Nigeria.
Sambo cautioned that failure to act decisively could jeopardize President Tinubu’s chances of securing re-election in 2027, drawing a parallel with former President Goodluck Jonathan’s 2015 electoral defeat, which he attributed largely to similar security failures.
In an interview with reporters, Sambo described insecurity as the most critical challenge facing the nation, emphasizing that the government’s inability to protect lives and property has left citizens in constant fear.
“The security of the people is a fundamental responsibility of any government,” he said. “If President Tinubu fails to tackle these challenges head-on, he may not return in 2027.”
He stressed that Nigerians are no longer swayed by handouts during elections. “The era of distributing cartons of noodles and salt during campaigns is over. People want security and food. Without these, they will not vote,” he said.
Highlighting the impact of insecurity on food production, Sambo noted that the North-West and North-East zones, which contribute over 60% of Nigeria’s agricultural output, are severely affected by terrorism and banditry. He said this has forced many farmers to abandon their land, leading to reduced food supply, increased prices, and widespread hunger.
“Food is scarce in Nigeria and people are hungry,” he stated, blaming the crisis on persistent insecurity in key agricultural zones.
He further linked the deteriorating security situation to broader economic challenges, including the depreciation of the naira, high transportation costs, and surging inflation — all of which, he said, are eroding the financial stability of ordinary citizens.
Sambo urged the President to take urgent action within the next six months to restore security and begin revitalizing local agriculture within a year.
“If these issues remain unaddressed, Tinubu may suffer the same fate as Jonathan, whose failure to stem insecurity cost him the presidency,” he concluded.
