TARABA, Nigeria – At least two people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following renewed violence between farmers and Fulani herders in Bandawa village, located in the Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.
According to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the conflict began on May 11 when 34-year-old Buhari Malam was reportedly attacked with a machete by suspected herders while working on his farm. He later succumbed to his injuries at the Bandawa Primary Health Care Centre.
Malam’s death sparked outrage among local youths, who launched a reprisal attack, killing five cows and injuring seven others. The violence escalated on May 12, when another farmer, Ishaku Tunde, was attacked and suffered multiple machete wounds. Later that day, a resident identified as Dauda Bawa was fatally attacked while traveling from Bandawa to Karim Lamido.
Local security sources disclosed that a Fulani leader, Ardo Baka, reported six herders missing amid the unrest. In response, a joint task force involving the military, police, vigilantes, and local hunters has been deployed to restore order, while community peace talks are ongoing.
In a related development, violence also erupted in Plateau State, where armed bandits attacked Dogon Ruwa village in Wase Local Government Area on May 12. The assailants, who arrived on motorcycles, shot and killed a resident, Alhaji Saini Haruna, before abducting two others—Alhaji Maikasuwa and Muhammadu Snu.
Security forces, including the military, police, and the Department of State Services (DSS), were quickly mobilized to the scene. The late Haruna was buried in line with Islamic rites after his family declined an autopsy. Authorities have launched an investigation and are working to secure the release of the abducted victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
