The United Kingdom has broadened its Global Talent visa programme, allowing more than 100 research focused companies to sponsor highly skilled scientists and engineers from around the world.
Announced on Thursday, the expansion is aimed at helping innovative British businesses recruit international experts in strategic fields such as artificial intelligence, clean energy, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and quantum technology.
For the first time, research-intensive private companies will be able to support exceptional researchers working on funded projects to relocate to the UK. The newly approved organisations include major industry players such as AstraZeneca and Jaguar Land Rover, alongside growing firms like Added Value Solutions, Denroy Plastics and Ffilm Cymru.
The participating companies operate across eight priority sectors identified under the UK government’s Modern Industrial Strategy, strengthening efforts to accelerate research, innovation and economic growth.
According to Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, the initiative is designed to make it easier for British companies to attract world-class researchers capable of driving breakthroughs in medicine, technology and advanced industries while creating high-skilled jobs.
The government noted that more than 12,500 researchers from over 130 countries have already benefited from the Global Talent visa through the endorsed funder pathway. The latest expansion extends similar opportunities beyond universities and public research institutions to eligible commercial research organisations.
The Global Talent visa is intended for individuals with exceptional talent or outstanding potential in areas including science, engineering, medicine, research, humanities and the arts.
Applicants may qualify through several accelerated routes, including:
Holding a senior academic or research appointment.
Receiving an eligible competitive research fellowship.
Being named on an approved funded research grant.
Applying through a peer-review route for established or emerging research leaders who do not meet the other eligibility pathways.
The visa also provides greater flexibility, allowing successful applicants to move between qualifying employers or establish spin-out businesses within the UK.
The announcement follows reforms introduced earlier this year that widened eligibility for the fast-track academic appointment route, covering research, innovation leadership and PhD-level research positions at approved UK institutions.
The UK government also plans to expand its Future Technology Research and Innovation (FTRI) scheme, enabling more research and development companies in sectors such as artificial intelligence, quantum technology and engineering biology to host international researchers, technical specialists and interns for up to two years.
Officials say the combined initiatives, supported by a £54 million Global Talent Fund and a dedicated Global Talent Taskforce, form part of a broader strategy to attract world-class expertise, strengthen Britain’s research ecosystem and boost long-term economic growth.
