A senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Dr. Christian Okeke, has called on the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, to resign following the widespread failure recorded in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Okeke’s comments come in the wake of JAMB’s admission of technical glitches during the conduct of the examination. It has been reported that the Board acknowledged system errors in the exam process.
Describing the situation as unacceptable, Okeke stated that the decision to have students in affected centres rewrite the exam fails to address the root of the problem. He insisted that JAMB should instead release the actual results of the candidates.
“The Board would have continued to deny responsibility if not for the sustained pressure from stakeholders and threats of legal action,” Okeke said. “Prof. Oloyede’s emotional response and acceptance of blame are not sufficient. If he truly takes responsibility, he should resign and allow the federal government to overhaul JAMB for better performance.”
The lecturer criticized JAMB’s earlier stance that the poor performance—where over 1.5 million candidates scored below 200—was a true reflection of the candidates’ academic abilities.
“It is troubling that the Board initially defended these results, denying any technical faults. This response added to the trauma of the students and their families,” he added.
Okeke also decried the plan for candidates in 65 centres in Lagos and 92 centres in the South-East, including Owerri, to retake the exam, describing it as “insensitive and emotionally draining.”
“How do Prof. Oloyede’s tears reverse the psychological distress experienced by these teenagers? This episode feels like a period of national mourning,” he said.
