Troubled by a recent report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) placing Imo State at the top in the Southeast for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Governor Hope Uzodimma has launched an all-out campaign against the harmful practice.
The 2025 UNICEF report indicates that FGM prevalence in Imo State stands at 38% among women aged 15-49 and 9.7% among girls aged 0-14, making it the highest in the region. In contrast, the prevalence rates among women aged 15-49 are 20.4% in Ebonyi, 20.3% in Abia, 19% in Enugu, and 13.1% in Anambra. Among girls aged 0-14, the rates are 3.7% in Enugu, 3.0% in Abia, 2.1% in Anambra, and 0.29% in Ebonyi.
During the 2025 International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM event organized by UNICEF in Owerri, Uzodimma emphasized the need for grassroots mobilization to tackle the issue.
“I urge an immediate localization of the fight against FGM. This battle must reach rural communities, where traditional leaders and key stakeholders will play a vital role in eliminating FGM in Imo State,” he stated.
The governor called on parents to take an active role in ending the practice, stressing the importance of abandoning outdated traditions.
“The 21st century’s digital era rejects customs and traditions that harm humanity. Gatherings like this are crucial in strengthening our collective resolve. By next year’s event, Imo must achieve complete intolerance for FGM. We are close to success, and we must push forward,” he asserted.
Chioma Uzodimma, the governor’s wife, advocated for mentorship programs to address both the immediate and long-term effects of FGM.
She reaffirmed Imo State’s commitment to setting an example in tackling the issue.
Chioma Uzodimma also expressed appreciation to UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for their collaboration and encouraged a more comprehensive approach to FGM eradication efforts.
