West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen has criticised what he described as inconsistent officiating in the Premier League after VAR ruled out his team’s late equaliser against Arsenal.
The relegation-threatened Hammers believed they had secured a crucial point at the London Stadium on Sunday when Callum Wilson scored deep into stoppage time after Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya lost control of the ball. However, referee Chris Kavanagh overturned the goal following a VAR review, judging that Pablo had fouled Raya in the build-up.
The decision handed Arsenal a 1-0 victory thanks to Leandro Trossard’s late winner, extending the Gunners’ lead at the top of the table while leaving West Ham stuck in the relegation zone with only two matches remaining.
Reacting after the match, Hermansen said physical contact during corners had become common in the league and questioned why this particular incident was punished while similar situations throughout the season had gone unpunished.
The Danish goalkeeper admitted the challenge on Raya could be viewed as a foul but argued there had been many comparable cases involving shirt-pulling, pushing, and blocking that officials had ignored in previous matches.
Hermansen also revealed he discussed the incident with Raya after the game, with both goalkeepers acknowledging that such clashes have frequently occurred during the season without attracting the same level of punishment.
