Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has challenged former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi to name a single election he has won in the state since the two parted ways in 2011.
Speaking on Saturday in Ahoada, Ahoada East Local Government Area, Wike told an interactive meeting with the Uzugbani Ekpeye National Executive Council and stakeholders from Ahoada East and Ahoada West that Amaechi’s electoral record in Rivers since their split was empty. “Since I left him in 2011, after 2011, mention one election that he has ever won in Rivers State,” he said.
The remarks came in response to Amaechi’s recent appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where the former transportation minister criticised the Federal Government’s project delivery record and challenged the administration to list major completed projects.
Wike turned the criticism back on his predecessor. He demanded an account of the $39 million paid for the Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte Specialist Hospital and the N68 billion monorail project, both started under Amaechi’s administration. A judicial commission set up during Wike’s time as governor had examined the $39.2 million payment to a contractor for the hospital that was never completed. He also asked what became of the monorail.
He dismissed a malaria control project involving Cuban personnel as a scam, saying $10 million was spent on fumigation yet mosquitoes continued to bite residents of Rivers State.
Wike noted that Amaechi spent eight years each as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor and minister, 24 years in senior public office. He asked what the former governor had attracted to Ekpeye land during that period and answered that there was nothing. He urged residents of Ahoada East and West to demand evidence of projects and political empowerment Amaechi claimed to have delivered.
Leadership, Wike said, should be judged by the people empowered, the projects completed and the structures left behind, not merely by the offices occupied. He contrasted his own approach of empowering successors with what he described as efforts to block others from rising, and criticised the use of personal and family tragedies for political gain.
The minister also recalled past disagreements with Amaechi over appointments and business interests linked to federal maritime agencies, and pointed to appointments and regional development structures under the Tinubu administration that he said had benefited the South-South.
