No fewer than 16 persons have lost their lives in a tragic road accident along the Okene–Osara–Lokoja highway in Kogi State.
The crash reportedly happened in the early hours of Friday after an 18-seater commercial bus lost control and plunged off a bridge in Osara, located in Adavi Local Government Area.
The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lawal Fagge, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation with Arise News. He disclosed that only two passengers survived the accident, though they sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital.
According to him, rescue officials from the FRSC Zariagi Unit responded promptly to the scene to evacuate victims and remove the damaged vehicle from the road.
Fagge blamed the accident on overspeeding and noted that the bodies of the deceased had been deposited in a morgue in Lokoja.
The incident has once again raised concerns over reckless driving and non-compliance with traffic regulations on Nigerian highways, as authorities continue to urge motorists to observe speed limits and road safety measures.
