A former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewale Adebayo, has revealed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party flagbearer Peter Obi are in talks to possibly defect to the SDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Adebayo disclosed that discussions are ongoing between the SDP and representatives of both political heavyweights, along with several other prominent figures.
“People are joining our party, and we’re happy to welcome them,” Adebayo said. “You can see how active I’ve been in receiving new members. The only issue we occasionally face is adjusting to our party’s culture, especially for those unfamiliar with environments where rules are strictly followed.”
He added: “Some of them come from backgrounds involving black market operations or Boy Scout-like politics, but we are managing that. Ultimately, we’re open to welcoming everyone.”
Adebayo named former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi among those reportedly considering the move. He noted that while no formal announcements have been made, internal party sources, including the Financial Secretary, have confirmed that talks are ongoing.
He urged prospective members to embrace the SDP’s values and political discipline, insisting that a united front under the party could unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“If they can commit to our values and help present a credible alternative to Nigerians, we are confident we can defeat the APC and retire President Bola Tinubu — whether to Lagos or any place of his choosing,” he said.
