With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has declared its ambition to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other major parties.
Speaking at the party’s North Central Zonal Caucus meeting on Thursday in Nasarawa State, Abubakar Dogara, SDP’s National Vice Chairman (North Central), said the party is making strategic efforts to strengthen its grassroots presence and widen its support base across the country.
“The SDP is now the bride of the Nigerian people,” Dogara said, emphasizing the party’s growing popularity. “We are organizing meetings from the zonal and national levels down to the wards and local governments. Our membership card has always been exhausted at the state level.”
Dogara highlighted ongoing membership registration drives and grassroots mobilization as part of preparations for the 2027 polls. He praised key party leaders such as Hon. Jonathan Gaza, Prince Adewale Adebayo, and Hon. Femi Olaniyi Ferrari for their contributions to the party’s progress in the North Central region.
One of the major resolutions from the meeting, Dogara said, was to safeguard the party’s internal structure and protect members from external interference that could compromise the party’s integrity.
Calling on Nigerians to join the party, Dogara presented the SDP as a credible alternative to the ruling APC. “We are calling on all Nigerians to register with the party from the ward level up to the national level, in line with our constitution. Our focus remains on the welfare, interests, and security of the people—unlike those currently in power who have failed to uphold constitutional protections.”
Also speaking at the event, Idoko Idoto, Chairman of the SDP in Benue State, expressed confidence in the party’s chances in the state and beyond.
“SDP has a 100% chance in Benue,” Idoto said. “We’ve governed here before and have always fielded credible candidates. Come 2027, we are coming with full force. We will take over Benue State, all senatorial districts, and make a strong impact in the House of Representatives and State Assembly.”
Idoto concluded with a bold declaration of the party’s readiness to provide transformational leadership across Nigeria.
