Former Senate President and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Adolphus Wabara, has asserted that the fate of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections lies solely in the hands of Nigerian voters, not state governors.
Wabara made this known in reaction to the recent endorsement of President Tinubu by governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 presidential race.
While commending the governors for granting Tinubu the traditional “right of first refusal,” Wabara stressed that such a gesture, though globally recognized, does not equate to electoral victory.
“The endorsement is in order, but being a flag bearer of the ruling party does not guarantee automatic victory,” he stated. “In 2015, the PDP’s sitting President, Goodluck Jonathan, was the party’s candidate but still lost to the opposition.”
Wabara urged the APC governors to let President Tinubu’s performance speak for him rather than pre-empt the electoral process.
“The Nigerian electorate, who are directly affected by the policies and governance of the APC-led administration, will ultimately determine the President’s fate at the polls,” he said.
He also cautioned against premature political campaigns, pointing out that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to lift the ban on political activities.
“The focus should be on addressing the economic hardship Nigerians are currently facing, rather than overheating the polity with early politicking,” he added.
Wabara further charged the APC leadership to prioritize the welfare of citizens, saying, “Millions of Nigerians have been plunged into poverty due to bad economic decisions. What the APC should be concerned with now is how to restore hope and improve living conditions, not playing early politics.”
