The National Vice Chairman (North-East) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mustapha Salihu, has dismissed claims of a rift between President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, describing the rumours as distractions engineered by “conflict entrepreneurs.”
Speculation has swirled in recent weeks over an alleged fallout between the two leaders, with reports suggesting that Vice President Shettima is being sidelined—particularly due to the President’s reluctance to transfer power during extended trips abroad. The Vice President’s consistent absence from key political endorsements for Tinubu’s second term has further fueled talk that Tinubu may be considering a new running mate for the 2027 elections.
Addressing the matter during an appearance on Channels Television on Monday, Salihu waved off the rumours, saying such matters are not for public discourse.
“The administration of a party isn’t run through social media, newspapers, or television—it’s handled internally,” he said.
He noted that speculation of tension between a President and his deputy is common in every administration and often exploited by insecure politicians.
“These kinds of rumours are inevitable. People will always attempt to paint a picture of friction between the principal and the Vice. But if you’re confident in your role and contributions, these things shouldn’t bother you,” he added.
Salihu also dismissed claims of discontent within the North-East chapter of the APC.
“I’m currently in Yola. I’ve met with party members from Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, and Yobe. We spent the night before the summit working together and brainstorming. There’s no division here,” he stated.
