The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has declared that there is no leadership vacuum within the party, issuing a stern warning to former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti ahead of a controversial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Speaking during a press conference at the party’s national secretariat on Monday, Abure accused Obi and Otti of betrayal, insisting that the leadership structure of the party remains intact.
“There is no vacancy in our party,” Abure said. “In the Labour Party, we stand by our candidates, even though some of them turn their backs on us after securing the ticket.”
He further criticized the recent interpretation of a Supreme Court judgment, describing it as misleading and urging party members and supporters to disregard it.
“The Supreme Court was clear – the internal affairs of political parties are to be handled by the parties themselves. I remain the National Chairman of the Labour Party,” he affirmed.
Abure also emphasized that the LP constitution does not permit the formation of any caretaker committee for the administration of the party.
This development comes as Obi and Otti have called for a NEC meeting scheduled for Wednesday in Abuja. The meeting is expected to be followed by a town hall session with key stakeholders at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.
