Former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has criticised Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, for describing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a betrayer over his reported plan to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Yusuf’s alleged move to the APC has reportedly angered Kwankwaso, who has openly condemned the decision and labelled it an act of betrayal.
Reacting to the development, Shekarau said Yusuf was only retracing a political path earlier taken by Kwankwaso himself. He reminded the former governor that he once defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC while serving as Kano governor without relinquishing his mandate.
Shekarau stated that political realignments are personal choices shaped by consultations and prevailing circumstances, adding that Governor Yusuf should not be vilified for exercising his constitutional right to join any political party of his choice.
Speaking in a viral audio message shared on his verified WhatsApp platform, Shekarau accused Kwankwaso of ignoring the political precedent he personally set.
He said Kwankwaso moved from the PDP to the APC during his tenure as governor and retained his seat, questioning why such an action is now being criticised when repeated by another leader.
According to Shekarau, if taking a mandate across party lines is now considered offensive, then the foundation for such a move was already laid by Kwankwaso himself.
The former governor also revisited events surrounding the formation of the New Nigeria Peoples Party in Kano, revealing that unresolved disagreements over power sharing arrangements contributed to his exit from the party.
Shekarau explained that after leaving the APC for the NNPP alongside Kwankwaso, several meetings were held in Abuja and Kano to agree on how elective positions and appointments would be shared among stakeholders.
He disclosed that Governor Yusuf was appointed to chair a committee tasked with developing the sharing formula, but after several months, a list emerged that allegedly excluded Shekarau’s political bloc.
According to him, despite Kwankwaso raising concerns over the matter, no resolution was reached, prompting him and his supporters to form a committee that eventually recommended their departure from the NNPP.
Shekarau said he rejected the arrangement because it left his political supporters without meaningful representation, stressing that political decisions such as defection should not automatically be branded as betrayal when taken in consultation with followers.
