The National Human Rights Commission has called on the Nigerian Air Force to explain the recurring civilian casualties caused by military airstrikes in different parts of the country, describing the situation as alarming and unacceptable.
Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu, expressed concern over repeated bombings affecting communities, markets and vulnerable civilians during counter-insurgency operations. He stressed that while the government has a duty to fight terrorism, banditry and insurgency, all military actions must comply with constitutional provisions, international humanitarian law and human rights standards.
Ojukwu noted that the continued deaths and injuries of innocent civilians, including women and children, raised serious concerns about the protection of human life and dignity. He questioned why such incidents have persisted despite previous public criticism and assurances of improved military operations.
The Commission referenced recent airstrike incidents reportedly recorded at Jilli Market in Yobe State, Shiroro Market in Niger State and Tumfa Market in Zamfara State within April and May.
According to the NHRC, military operations must always uphold the principles of distinction, necessity, proportionality and accountability, warning that civilians should never be treated as collateral damage.
The Commission also demanded transparent and independent investigations into all reported incidents, while calling for justice, compensation and psychosocial support for victims and affected communities.
