New York — U.S. President Donald Trump has paid $5.6 million to writer E. Jean Carroll following a civil jury’s finding that he sexually assaulted and defamed her, according to a court filing made public on Tuesday.
Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, confirmed the payment in a statement, saying the damages awarded by the jury three years ago have now been received in full.
“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll,” Kaplan said. “Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict.”
The payment comes after the U.S. Supreme Court declined in late June to hear Trump’s appeal against the original May 2023 judgment.
The 2023 civil trial in Manhattan resulted in the jury holding Trump liable for sexual abuse (a form of assault under New York law) and defamation related to his public denials of Carroll’s allegations. The verdict included compensatory and punitive damages.
This development marks the resolution of one of the most high-profile legal cases involving the former president. Trump has consistently denied the allegations and described the case as politically motivated.
