African design is gaining stronger international recognition as Design Week Lagos, backed by Afreximbank and the Lagos State Government, prepares to showcase emerging African creatives at SaloneSatellite 2026 in Milan.
The exhibition forms part of the “All Roads Lead to Lagos” global tour, an initiative aimed at positioning African design more prominently within the international market.
A carefully selected group of rising designers — including Athanasius Johnson, Nicole Adaora Enwonwu, Odema Acacia Saleh, Richard A. Aina, Joan Eric Udorie, Olaoluwa AJ Durotoye, and Myles Igwebuike — will present works spanning furniture, lighting, and product design. Their creations are expected to highlight a blend of African cultural identity, innovation, and commercial potential.
In addition to the exhibition, the initiative seeks to connect designers with global galleries, manufacturers, and retailers, creating opportunities for partnerships, production deals, and international market access.
Founder of Design Week Lagos, Titi Ogufere, explained that the project is focused on building a sustainable design economy by helping African creatives transition from talent development to global industry participation.
According to her, the Milan showcase — followed by stops in London and Paris — will present Lagos as a global creative hub while giving designers direct access to international platforms and business opportunities.
The initiative also aligns with Lagos State’s broader strategy to expand its creative economy through its Design Tourism programme, launched to position Lagos as a major destination for culture, innovation, and tourism.
Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson, said the programme is designed to promote both visibility and economic opportunities for local creatives by linking them with global markets.
Support for the Milan activation will come through Afreximbank’s Creative Africa Nexus programme, CANEX, which focuses on strengthening Africa’s creative industries and connecting talent with finance and trade opportunities.
Following exhibitions in Milan, Paris, and London, the global tour will conclude in Lagos in October 2026, where attention will shift toward industrial growth, investment, and market integration for African design.
