The Office of the Senate President has described reports suggesting that Godswill Akpabio promised to secure senatorial tickets for lawmakers who lost their All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries as misleading and inaccurate.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President’s office clarified that Akpabio neither made nor authorized any such promise.
According to the statement, during an interaction with colleagues, Senator Akpabio only sympathized with senators affected by the primaries’ outcome. He reassured them that the APC national leadership was actively addressing issues from the exercise, and that the final list of candidates would be released in due course in line with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
The office emphasized that Akpabio remains committed to party discipline and due process. He will not interfere in the internal mechanisms of the APC or make commitments beyond the purview of the National Assembly leadership.
The statement also addressed reports linking Akpabio to calls for a Senate investigation into recent security incidents involving the military. While acknowledging the National Assembly’s constitutional oversight role, Akpabio believes this is not the opportune time for a public probe of the Armed Forces.
With Nigerian troops currently engaged in multiple fronts against terrorism, banditry, and other national security threats, a public inquisition could undermine morale and operational effectiveness. The Senate President instead advocates for collaboration, support, and closed-door engagements with security agencies at this critical period. Oversight, he believes, should be exercised responsibly without creating distractions that could embolden adversaries.
