Africa’s richest man and President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening food security across Africa through major investments in fertiliser production, saying the continent has the potential not only to feed itself but also to become a global agricultural exporter.
Speaking in Gode, located in Ethiopia’s Somali region, during a visit hosted by Abiy Ahmed, Dangote said Africa’s persistent food insecurity is largely linked to inadequate access to fertiliser and other critical farming inputs.
According to a statement from the Dangote Group, the Ethiopian Prime Minister personally welcomed Dangote and toured the site of the proposed fertiliser plant, where construction has already commenced.
Dangote explained that the company’s fertiliser investments are aimed at improving agricultural productivity, supporting farmers, and promoting long-term food self-sufficiency across the continent.
He stressed that with sustained investment in agricultural infrastructure and fertiliser production, Africa could unlock its vast agricultural potential and emerge as a net exporter of food products.
The billionaire businessman also revealed that the Group’s investments in Ethiopia have increased significantly from $2.5 billion to over $4 billion. The expanded investment package includes a 110-kilometre pipeline, a 120-megawatt power plant, a polypropylene packaging facility, and a two-million-tonne NPK blending plant, among other projects.
Dangote described Ethiopia as one of the Group’s most strategic investment destinations, noting that the country now accounts for nearly nine per cent of the company’s planned continental investments through 2030.
He further praised Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for his economic development vision, adding that strong collaboration between governments and the private sector is essential for Africa’s growth.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described Dangote as a reliable development partner and said the fertiliser project would help reduce Ethiopia’s dependence on imported fertiliser while supporting millions of local farmers.
He added that the project is expected to create jobs, strengthen industrial value chains, and position Ethiopia as a leading agro-industrial hub on the continent.
The large-scale fertiliser initiative is widely regarded as a major step toward transforming Africa’s agricultural sector, reducing import dependence, and promoting inclusive economic growth.
