Senior members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State have petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Petroleum (Gas) Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, and the state party chairman, Mr. Stephen Ntukekpo, of working to cede the party to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Umo Eno.
In an open letter titled “The Worrisome State of the APC in Akwa Ibom State: A Call for Your Urgent Intervention,” signed by Elder Okokon James, Hon. Peter Ibanga, and Chief Victor Affiah—representing the Uyo, Eket, and Ikot Ekpene senatorial districts—the party elders urged Tinubu to take immediate action to revive the party in the state.
The chieftains, who claim to have been with the APC since its inception, described the current state of affairs in Akwa Ibom as unprecedented, citing “selfishness, greed, betrayal, and treachery” within the party.
The letter stated: “What Senate President Godswill Akpabio is doing to the loyal members of the APC in Akwa Ibom is the height of betrayal and treachery against the party that facilitated his rise to power. History and posterity will judge him and those enabling him in this scheme.”
According to the elders, both the party chairman and the minister have allegedly admitted in different forums that they were instructed by Akpabio to weaken the APC’s structure in the state, ensuring an easy victory for the PDP in the 2027 elections in exchange for the PDP’s backing of Akpabio’s third-term senatorial bid.
The chieftains further claimed that Akpabio’s strategy is misguided, arguing that Governor Umo Eno is unlikely to defect to the APC or support Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
Expressing their concerns, they warned: “If urgent steps are not taken to restore and strengthen the APC in Akwa Ibom, there will be no party members left to receive Mr. President when he visits for the 2027 campaign.”
They accused Akpabio and his allies of effectively surrendering the APC to the PDP, leading to growing disillusionment among party members, many of whom are now considering joining an emerging opposition coalition.
The letter concluded with a direct warning to Tinubu: “If APC members in Akwa Ibom defect en masse to opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections, hold the Senate President and the Minister of Petroleum (Gas) responsible. Akpabio has so weakened the party that he is now dependent on the PDP’s goodwill for his own political survival.”
The petition underscores the deepening internal crisis within the APC in Akwa Ibom, raising concerns about the party’s ability to remain competitive in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
