President Bola Tinubu has urged the people of Benue State and Nigerians at large to unite in confronting the nation’s common enemies, rather than turning on one another.
Speaking during a meeting with stakeholders in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, Tinubu called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to allocate land for the establishment of ranches, as part of efforts to address the persistent conflict between farmers and herders.
“Give me land so we can establish a ranch and move away from this backwardness,” the President said. “We must hand over to the next generation a banner without stain, as our national anthem says. We are one family, living in the same house, though sleeping in different rooms. Let’s fight our enemies together, not each other. A human life is worth far more than that of a cow.”
Tinubu’s remarks come in the wake of renewed violence in Benue State, where over 200 people have reportedly been killed by suspected herders in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area.
Governor Alia has attributed the killings to suspected herders allegedly motivated by land disputes.
