A rocket developed by exploded during a test at the company’s launch facility in , sending a massive fireball into the sky and prompting an investigation into the cause of the incident.
The explosion occurred around 9:00 p.m. local time during a hotfire test ahead of a scheduled launch mission. Footage from the scene showed the rocket bursting into flames and engulfing parts of the test area.
In a statement shared on social media, Blue Origin confirmed that it had “experienced an anomaly” during the test but noted that all personnel were safe and accounted for.
Company founder later addressed the incident, saying it was too early to determine the exact cause.
“Very rough day, but we’ll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying,” Bezos said, adding that everyone involved in the operation was unharmed.
Local authorities assured residents there was no danger to the public, while confirmed that the situation remained contained within the launch site.
The said emergency teams responded quickly and were working alongside Blue Origin to review available data and determine what caused the anomaly.
The failed test marks another setback for Blue Origin as it seeks to expand its launch capabilities. The company’s New Glenn programme recently came under scrutiny after a satellite mission for failed to reach its intended orbit.
