Dangote Industries Limited has launched preliminary steps toward developing a proposed 10,000-hectare deep seaport in the Olokola Free Trade Zone, signaling a major expansion into maritime infrastructure, logistics and export-driven industrialisation.
The project, part of the company’s Vision 2030 agenda, is aimed at strengthening its position as a globally recognised manufacturing and industrial powerhouse.
Situated along Nigeria’s Atlantic coastline between Ogun State and Ondo State, the planned seaport is expected to become a major hub for imports, exports and regional trade activities.
A delegation from the company, headed by Managing Director of Infrastructure and Logistics, Capt. Jamil Abubakar, has already begun consultations with host communities in both states ahead of the project rollout.
During the engagements, Abubakar described the proposed port as a transformative initiative that would stimulate economic growth, ease congestion at existing ports and create jobs and business opportunities for surrounding communities.
He noted that the seaport’s coastal location gives it a strategic advantage for regional and international trade, while also supporting Nigeria’s industrial expansion goals.
According to company officials, the facility is being designed as a logistics gateway for an integrated industrial ecosystem capable of supporting Africa’s growing supply chain and trade network.
The proposed port is expected to handle exports of fertiliser, petrochemicals and refined petroleum products, while also supporting future liquefied natural gas exports. It will equally facilitate the importation of heavy industrial machinery needed for large-scale industrial projects.
As part of its preliminary activities, the delegation—alongside surveyors and environmental consultants—visited several coastal host communities, including Ode-Omi, Araromi Seaside Kingdom and Igbokoda.
Traditional rulers in the affected communities expressed support for the project. The Lenuwa of Ode-Omi, Oba Folailu Adekunle Hassan, approved the commencement of surveys and household enumeration, while the Alara of Araromi Seaside Kingdom, Oba Adeoloye Olawole, also pledged support for the development.
The delegation additionally visited the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base, where military officials reportedly welcomed the initiative.
The development comes as Dangote Group continues expanding its industrial investments across Africa. Recently, Aliko Dangote advocated increased local investment to attract foreign capital into Nigeria.
Earlier this year, the company signed a $400 million deal with XCMG Construction Machinery to support refinery expansion projects. In another related move, Yoweri Museveni disclosed that discussions had been held with Dangote regarding a potential regional refinery project in East Africa.
