The Edo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a deadly shooting that occurred on Sunday evening around the University of Benin axis in Benin City.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, preliminary findings indicate that three individuals — Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu — were leaving the university premises in a Mercedes-Benz GLK vehicle when another white GLK reportedly intercepted them near the institution’s main gate in Ugbowo.
The assailants allegedly opened fire from their vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The attack left the occupants of the vehicle with varying degrees of gunshot injuries, while a female passerby identified as Dorathy Ubah was also struck during the incident.
Police officers who responded to the distress call immediately evacuated the victims to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for emergency treatment. However, Alexander Omogiate was later confirmed dead by medical personnel, while the remaining victims are reportedly responding to treatment.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, ordered a comprehensive investigation aimed at identifying and apprehending the fleeing suspects.
The command reiterated its resolve to tackle violent crimes and warned criminal elements operating around campuses and other parts of the state to desist from unlawful activities.
Residents with useful information were urged to assist investigators by reporting to the nearest police station or contacting the command’s emergency lines, with assurances that all information would be handled confidentially.
Reacting to the incident, Monday Okpebholo strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless and disturbing act that threatens public peace and human dignity.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, the governor expressed sympathy to the family and associates of the deceased and pledged the state government’s support for efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
