The Federal Government has announced plans to train 100,000 Nigerians in the manufacturing and assembly of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure as part of efforts to boost local capacity and promote cleaner transportation.
Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this on Monday in Abuja, stating that at least 1,000 people from each state would benefit from the programme, while 100 Nigerians would also be sponsored to China for advanced training under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The initiative follows a strategic partnership between Nigeria and Chinese firm New Power Technology aimed at localising the production and assembly of CNG dispensers, refuelling stations, and EV charging systems in the country.
The partnership, supported by the Chinese government, is expected to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported energy infrastructure while accelerating the transition to cleaner transport systems.
Speaking through the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, Shettima said the programme aligns with the Federal Government’s directive for ministries and agencies to adopt CNG-powered vehicles in order to ease transportation costs.
He added that Nigeria’s youthful population gives the country an advantage in replicating China’s success in transportation electrification through technology transfer and local manufacturing.
Chief Executive Officer of NPT, Liu Shihua, said the company plans to establish a complete EV ecosystem in Nigeria, including battery-swapping systems, vehicle retrofitting services, and digital maintenance platforms.
According to him, the company intends to convert one million petrol-powered tricycles to electric tricycles within three years and build 10,000 charging and battery-swapping stations nationwide, a move expected to create about 50,000 jobs.
He further revealed that Chinese technical experts would be deployed to Nigeria to support training and infrastructure development, while 60 to 70 Nigerian students would receive fully funded training in China and return as trainers to expand local expertise.
Technical Adviser to the President on Economic and Financial Inclusion, Nurudeen Zauro, said the initiative supports the administration’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy through innovation and strategic international partnerships.
Executive Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, Ismaeel Ahmed, noted that the collaboration would help reduce transportation costs and improve living standards for Nigerians, stressing that transport expenses currently consume a large share of household income.
