Nollywood actress Genevieve Nnaji is set to make her return to the screen in Wahala, a new BBC drama series adapted from Nikki May’s debut novel of the same title.
The BBC unveiled the cast of the six-part thriller on Tuesday, confirming that Genevieve will star alongside Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo and Susan Wokoma.
The series, whose title means “trouble” in Nigerian slang, centres on four Nigerian-British women living in London whose long-standing friendship is shaken by hidden secrets, betrayal and unresolved issues from the past.
Wahala is adapted by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko and produced by BBC Studios, Firebird Pictures for BBC iPlayer, and BBC One.
According to the official synopsis, the women’s lives and friendships are pushed to the edge as dark secrets from the past begin to surface.
Speaking about the project, Theresa Ikoko expressed excitement about bringing the story to life with a talented cast and crew. Adelayo Adedayo also described the series as a thrilling journey audiences should look forward to.
Deborah Ayorinde said the role would allow viewers to see a different side of her as an actress, while Cush Jumbo and Susan Wokoma praised the strength of the story and creative team behind the production.
Genevieve Nnaji, who has been away from acting for some time, said she was excited to join the project and work with such an impressive team on what she called an intriguing story.
The series will be directed by Leonora Lonsdale, Theresa Ikoko and Remi Weekes, with Ado Yoshizaki Cassuto serving as producer.
Meanwhile, Nikki May recently gained further recognition in Nigeria after her novel This Motherless Land emerged as one of the finalists for the 2025 Nigeria Prize for Literature, which was eventually won by Oyin Olugbile for her novel Sanya.
