The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned that he will publicly name anyone owing ground rent in Abuja — including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.
Wike issued the warning on Thursday during the commissioning of the newly constructed Collector Road CN2 (Zakari A. Kyari Street), linking Arterial Road N11 (Ahmadu Bello Way) in Mabushi to the Judges’ Quarters in Katampe, along with other roads.
Addressing dignitaries at the event, the Minister said he would not hesitate to publish the names of defaulters, regardless of their status, stressing the importance of ground rent revenue for funding infrastructure projects in the FCT.
“So, Mr. President, you are here and luckily the Deputy Speaker is representing you,” Wike said. “Mr. Deputy Speaker, if you have land here and haven’t paid your ground rent, we will publish your name.
“It’s not about embarrassment — it’s about ensuring we have the funds to continue our development projects. No poor man is building these houses; they are being built by the wealthy. So you must pay to support the development that benefits the people.”
Wike reiterated his administration’s commitment to holding all landowners accountable, stressing that prompt payment of ground rent is essential for sustainable growth in the territory.
