Owerri – The Action Peoples’ Party (APP) in Imo State has condemned a daring early morning invasion of its state secretariat in Owerri by suspected political thugs, describing the incident as a dangerous threat to democracy and peaceful political engagement.
The party said the attack occurred at about 6:10 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026, when a group of heavily armed men scaled the perimeter fence and forcefully entered the premises in commando style. According to the APP, eyewitnesses alleged that the operation was led by an aide to Governor Hope Uzodinma and some of his associates.
The assailants allegedly vandalised party property and destroyed billboards as well as other campaign materials mounted within the secretariat.
In a statement issued by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Steve Nnamdi, the APP expressed deep concern over what it termed a pattern of politically motivated intimidation. The party cited similar incidents recently recorded at Umuoyima in Owerri Municipal Council and Arondizuogu in Ideato North Local Government Area.
“The Action Peoples’ Party views this alleged act as a disturbing development capable of undermining the peaceful political atmosphere currently existing in the state,” the statement read.
The APP has called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately launch a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the attack, stressing that anyone found responsible regardless of status or political affiliation, must be prosecuted.
The party appealed to Governor Hope Uzodinma and all security agencies to intervene decisively and ensure a level playing field for all political parties as the state prepares for future elections.
It urged its members and supporters to remain calm and law-abiding, avoiding any form of retaliation while security agencies carry out their duties.
