Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of Nigeria’s ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, citing a pattern of disrespect from party leaders and the unfulfilled commitments of the consensus governorship candidate, Solomon Adeola.
In a resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to Ogun State APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, Iyabo announced her immediate exit from the party barely two months after she stepped aside in the contentious race for the 2027 governorship ticket. She had joined the APC only in February, quickly emerging as a prominent contender before yielding to the party’s preference for a consensus candidate.
While publicly accepting the outcome in the interest of party unity, Iyabo was sharply critical of the process. She accused party leaders of sidelining established APC guidelines, failing to conduct proper consultations before anointing Adeola, and turning a blind eye to violence allegedly meted out to her supporters during the period.
The breaking point, according to her letter, came after the primary. Adeola met with her team to secure their support for the general election and was presented with three specific requests. He reportedly promised a response within one week. More than two months later, no feedback had been received.
Describing this silence as emblematic of a broader culture of disregard despite her contributions to strengthening the party’s structures in Ogun State, Iyabo delivered a pointed verdict: “When disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table.”
Despite her grievances, the former senator struck a measured tone in parts of the letter, expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and certain Ogun APC leaders, notably Chairman Yemi Sanusi and Ogun Central Senatorial District Chairman, Chief Soremi, for the respect and warmth extended to her during her brief time in the party.
Iyabo’s departure represents a significant blow to the APC in Ogun State, where the Obasanjo political dynasty retains considerable influence. Her resignation underscores the lingering tensions within the party following the controversial adoption of a consensus candidate and raises fresh questions about internal cohesion as the 2027 electoral cycle gathers momentum.
As of now, neither the Ogun State APC nor Solomon Adeola has issued a public response to the resignation.
