Ibadan — Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged the United Nations and international human rights organisations to independently investigate the May 15 abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the incident as grave enough to require scrutiny beyond domestic institutions.
The governor made the call on Monday while receiving the rescued pupils and their teachers at his office in Ibadan. He stressed that the move was not intended to undermine Nigeria’s security agencies but to establish the full truth and ensure accountability at every level.
“I, therefore, with a full sense of responsibility as the executive governor of Oyo State, call on the appropriate international human rights organisations and accountability mechanisms, including those within the United Nations system, to closely examine the facts surrounding this abduction and the circumstances of its resolution,” Makinde said.
He added that such an investigation would help “reinforce confidence” that those responsible “regardless of office, influence, or affiliation” would be held to account.
Makinde noted that primary responsibility for national security lies with the federal government, in line with the Nigerian Constitution. He demanded a transparent account of the incident, including any institutional failures, negligence, or possible collusion, and measures to prevent future occurrences.
“This is not about politics. It is about justice for the victims, reassurance for our people, and restoring public confidence that every Nigerian child can go to school without fear,” he said.
The governor assured parents across the state that his administration would not relent in efforts to secure schools and communities.
The pupils and teachers regained their freedom on Friday, July 10, after 56 days in captivity. The Presidency announced that a joint operation by the Nigerian Army, police, and intelligence from the Department of State Services (DSS) led to their rescue, with eight abductors arrested and others neutralised.
President Bola Tinubu commended the security agencies for the operation, which he said was carried out without collateral damage, and praised the Oyo State Government for its cooperation. He also called for enhanced security around schools nationwide.
