Former Presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and obtained their membership cards.
It was reported that the duo joined the party at its national headquarters in Abuja on Sunday evening, following a closed-door meeting with NDC leaders, including the party’s National Leader and former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson.
This move comes after both politicians recently aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). It represents a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Rumours have it that the defection was driven by internal crises and uncertainties within the ADC, prompting the leaders to seek a more stable platform.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement and allies like Buba Galadima had earlier confirmed that discussions with the NDC were nearly complete (around 90%), with stakeholders from across Kano State endorsing the decision.
There are strong indications that the NDC is positioning itself as a fresh, viable vehicle for opposition forces, with speculation that Peter Obi could be fielded as the presidential candidate and Kwankwaso as his running mate in 2027.
The development has generated excitement among supporters of the so-called “OK Movement” (Obi-Kwankwaso), who see it as a potential game-changer capable of consolidating opposition votes.
However, it also highlights the fluid and fast-paced nature of political realignments in Nigeria as parties jostle for relevance before the next electoral cycle.
This latest move further weakens the ADC while boosting the profile of the relatively new Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the opposition space.
